Ancient Worship and the God Within

Ancient Worship and the God Within

In ancient times, many cultures saw gods and goddesses as archetypal forces that lived within and around them. This perspective is evident in polytheistic systems like Greek, Roman, and Egyptian religions, where gods represented natural forces, human emotions, and life experiences.

For example:

  • The Moon (Selene/Luna/Artemis/Hecate) was associated with feminine intuition, emotions, and the subconscious.

  • Mercury (Hermes) ruled communication and intellect.

  • Venus (Aphrodite) embodied love and attraction.

These deities were honored through rituals, storytelling, and personal reflection. People aligned their actions and behaviors with these archetypes, consciously or unconsciously activating those energies within themselves.

Astrology can be seen as a map of these archetypal forces within us. The planets are energetic symbols of different aspects of the psyche. In ancient systems like Hermeticism and Stoicism, the belief was that understanding and aligning with these forces helped one unify with the universe ("as above, so below").

I suppose I’m suggesting that instead of seeing worship as praise to something external, it becomes a practice of acknowledging and activating the divine energy within.

The concept of gods residing within us is far from groundbreaking and has deep historical roots across various spiritual traditions. In ancient Egypt, it was believed that each person carried a divine spark—ka and ba—reflecting the idea that the gods existed within all of creation. Similarly, the Stoic philosophers spoke of the logos, a divine spark present in every soul, guiding individuals toward wisdom and virtue. In Hinduism, the belief that the Atman (individual soul) is one with Brahman (universal soul) emphasizes the inherent divinity within each person. Even early Christian mysticism echoes this idea, suggesting that the "Kingdom of God is within you" (Luke 17:21), pointing to an inner connection to the divine. Across cultures and eras, these teachings reveal a shared understanding that the sacred is not solely external but also embodied in human experience.

The ancient Greek maxim "Know thyself," inscribed at the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, encouraged people to explore self-awareness and recognize their unique place in the universe.  Philosophers like Socrates and Plato expanded on this idea, teaching that true wisdom begins with understanding one’s own nature, strengths, and limitations.

Practical Application

You could intentionally align your week with planetary energies:

  • Monday (Moon): Emotional well-being, nurturing, intuitive work.

  • Tuesday (Mars): Action, energy, tackling challenges.

  • Wednesday (Mercury): Communication, learning, mental tasks.

  • Thursday (Jupiter): Expansion, abundance, teaching.

  • Friday (Venus): Creativity, beauty, relationships.

  • Saturday (Saturn): Structure, discipline, long-term planning.

  • Sunday (Sun): Self-expression, vitality, celebrating life.

By honoring these energies within, you're essentially reconnecting with an ancient form of spiritual practice that integrates astrology with daily living. This perspective turns worship into self-empowerment. You're not asking for something outside to intervene—you’re acknowledging that you already carry this divine energy and are choosing to express it consciously.

Perhaps in the future I’ll come up with a workshop where we learn to work with these energies as they interact in our birthcharts (by sign and house placement).  In the meantime, I’m curious to know if this concept resonates with you.  Share your thoughts!
