Will Grandma Come Through in a Psychic Reading?

Understanding the difference between intuitive guidance and mediumship, and what to expect in a session.

I often hear people use the terms psychic reading and mediumship reading interchangeably, which can create confusion around what a “reading” actually is. I want to clarify how I define these practices and explain the way I work.

While some readers choose to blend psychic and mediumship work into a single session, I’ve found that I prefer to work with them separately. I believe it’s helpful to understand the difference, no matter who you choose to work with, and I want to share a little about why.

The way I connect and what comes through in a session can be very different depending on the intention.

In a psychic reading, I’m tuning into your energy. This can include what you’re currently dealing with, the energy surrounding a situation, patterns that may be playing out, and the potential paths in front of you. I may use tarot or oracle cards as a tool, but the connection itself is intuitive. This type of reading is helpful when you’re looking for clarity, direction, or support in navigating your life as it’s unfolding.

Mediumship is different. Instead of focusing on your energy, I’m connecting with loved ones in spirit. When I open to mediumship, I’m looking for evidence first (details, memories, personality traits, or specific pieces of information that help validate who is coming through). From there, the connection moves into messages. Each session unfolds in its own way, but the intention is always to create an authentic connection with Spirit.

You may notice that many psychic mediums combine both psychic and mediumship work in the same session. While that is a common approach, it’s not how I choose to work.

Doing ethical readings is of the utmost importance to me, and I’ve spent a lot of time and energy studying, practicing, and refining my approach to ensure that I’m working in a way that is responsible and respectful.

When I’m connecting with Spirit, I want to ensure that I’m not also reading your energy in a way that could influence or blur the connection. Maintaining that boundary is important to me, because I never want to confuse intuitive impressions with true Spirit communication.

I also believe it’s important to be honest about what is coming through. I would never claim to be connecting with a loved one if I’m only picking up intuitive information from your energy field.

I also choose to separate these services because I want to make sure you receive exactly what you’re looking for. It also allows me to set a clear intention at the beginning of the session and stay focused what is most relevant to you.

It doesn’t mean that there won't be some crossover during a session, but I will always ask for your permission before sharing.

Not everyone feels ready to connect with loved ones who have passed, and I respect that. In the same way, if you’re coming specifically for mediumship, you may not be looking for intuitive guidance. I honor that by keeping the focus aligned with your intention for the session.

There’s also an distinction when it comes to guidance.

When you’re seeking advice or direction, it’s more supportive to look at things intuitively by working with your own energy and life path. Psychic readings create space for that exploration in a more empowering way.

While loved ones in spirit may offer encouragement, mediumship isn’t meant to replace your own decision-making process. Instead, mediumship readings offer evidence and reassurance that your loved one is still with you in spirit.

Every practitioner is different. Here’s how I typically work in a session.

For mediumship sessions, I like to begin without prior information. This allows me to tune in clearly and share what I’m receiving without influence. You don’t need to say much at first, just a nod if something makes sense is perfect. From there, we can allow the connection to unfold and move into specific questions. You’re always welcome to share as much or as little as you’d like once the connection is established.

For intuitive or psychic guidance, including tarot readings, I find it most helpful when you come with a clear question or area of focus. This gives direction to the reading and allows me to tune into the energy surrounding your situation. That said, it’s also okay to come in with a general intention and see what comes through. Most people do have a question they want answered but don’t always want to ask it out loud, and that’s completely cool. You can hold that intention in your mind, and I'll intend on the most important information to come forward.

Still reading? Take a deep breath.

I like to begin my sessions by taking a few deep breaths together and guiding a short meditation, especially before intuitive or psychic readings, to help open the energy field. I’ve found that even during mediumship, this makes a difference. It allows us both to relax and raise the energy, creating a clearer and more supportive connection for Spirit to come through.

So if you’ve been wondering whether a loved one might come through in a psychic reading, it’s not usually the focus of that type of session. If you’re feeling called to connect with someone in Spirit, that’s where mediumship comes in.

If you’re feeling called to book a session with me, you can choose the experience that feels most aligned for you below.

TL;DR

Psychic readings focus on you and your path. Mediumship focuses on connecting with loved ones in Spirit. If you’re not sure which one is right for you, feel free to reach out. I’m happy to help guide you. 🤍
