How to Connect with Your Spirit Guides and Build a Personal Relationship
Updated: Sep 30
Someone once told me who my spirit guides were but it never felt right to me.
A psychic medium named them for me during a reading. She described the energies she sensed around me, and I really wanted to trust what she shared. I sat in meditation. I called on the names. I tried to connect.
But it still never felt right.
Thinking back, I do believe she saw something. I believe she was reading real energy through the lens of her own experience, symbolism, and spiritual framework. The problem was that her way of seeing did not match the way I see, feel, and understand spiritual energy.
Through this experience I learned that my connection could not be handed to me fully formed by someone else.
It wasn't until I started reaching out in my own way that I was able to build an ongoing relationship with the supportive energy around me. It became personal and it started to make sense through my language.
And that is what I want to offer you.

Spirit guides can take many forms
When people talk about spirit guides, they use many different names:
Spirit guides
Spirit team
Spirit helpers
Spirit allies
Ancestors
Angels
Archangels
Ascended masters
Goddesses
Deities
Animal guides
Orbs of light
Some people feel a clear presence with a name and personality. Others experience guidance as color, warmth, sound, dreams, repeating signs, inner knowing, or a calming presence.
You don't have to force your guides into a form that doesn't resonate with you.
For one person, Archangel Michael may feel like a strong protective energy. For someone else, that same he may appear as blue light, a shield, a hawk, or an inner voice that says, “You are safe.” Another person may feel connected to Quan Yin, Mother Mary, Master Jesus, a goddess, an ancestor, or a nameless field of compassionate energy.
None of these are more valid than the others. The form is just the doorway.
Your spirit team will show up in a way that fits your soul, your background, your imagination, your culture, your emotional needs, and your spiritual language. So if a particular name, image, or tradition calls to you, it may be worth exploring.
Notice what resonates
One of the easiest ways to begin is to pay attention to what piques your interest.
Maybe you keep hearing about Isis, Hecate, Lakshmi, Mary Magdalene, or Saint Germain through books, conversations, meditations, or oracle cards. Maybe you feel drawn to owls, roses, golden light, the moon, or a particular element like water or fire.
Ask yourself:
What names am I curious about?
What images do I return to again and again?
What spiritual images have always interested me?
What kind of guidance do I need?
Research can help, especially if you feel drawn to a specific guide or spiritual figure. Read a little and notice if you feel open to something in particular.
Be discerning though. A name standing out doesn't mean you have to claim that energy as your guide.

Use oracle cards or bibliomancy as a doorway
Oracle decks can be a tool to find a guide you resonate with, especially when you are just beginning.
If you have a deck based on angels, goddesses, ascended masters, ancestors, animals, or archetypes, it can help you explore those energies.
Before pulling a card, just set this intention:
“I invite loving, clear, supportive guidance from the beings and energies here for my highest good.”
Then pull a card and see who shows up.
Read the guidebook. Look at the image. Notice the colors, symbols, expression, posture, animals, or elements. Pay attention to the first thought or feeling that comes up for you.
Bibliomancy (divination through books) can work the same way. Choose a spiritually supportive book written about ascended masters, angels, goddesses, mythology, or sacred teachings. Hold the book, ask for guidance, open to a page, and read the passage that you find there.
Then ask:
What phrase stands out?
What energy do I feel from this page?
Does this name or symbol feel connected to me?
What guidance is coming through?
The point is to engage your intuition and see what resonates or continues to call to you.
Cards, books, and symbols act like mirrors. They help bring your inner knowing to the surface.
Meditate for guidance
Meditation is one of the most direct ways to connect with your spirit guides.
You can listen to a guided meditation on YouTube, sit in silence, or walk outside and invite your guides to speak through nature.
What matters most is your intention.
Try this:
Sit or lie down somewhere quiet.
Take a few slow breaths.
Imagine roots growing from your body into the earth.
Picture a warm light around you.
Say silently or out loud, “I invite my loving spirit guides, helpers, and allies to connect with me.”
Notice what comes up for you.
You might get a name, face, color, animal, sensation, sentence, or memory. (Or you may feel nothing at first but don’t give up).
I think Spirit communication is often depicted as something loud but in reality its very subtle. So much that you'll probably feel you're making it up. And, in a way, you are. It's our imagination that is linked to these higher realms of existence.
A shift in temperature, a pressure around the shoulders, a flash of light in the mind’s eye, a word that repeats, or a feeling of comfort can all be part of the connection.
If nothing happens, the meditation still “worked.” You practiced showing up and that is how a relationship begins.

Create a sacred meeting place in your mind
One of my favorite practices is creating a sacred inner space where I can meet my guides.
This is a place you build in meditation with your imagination and intention. It can be anything that feels safe and beautiful to you.
It might be:
A garden with a bench
A temple by the ocean
A cabin in the woods
A circle of trees under the moon
A room filled with candles
A mountaintop at sunrise
A field of stars
There place is your own creation. It belongs to you.
To begin, close your eyes and imagine yourself walking into this sacred space. Let the details come to you. Notice the ground, the air, the light, the sounds. Add anything that helps you create a sanctuary.
Once the space is ready, set the intention that only loving and supportive energies aligned with your highest good may enter.
Then invite your spirit guides to meet you there.
Don't overthink the outcome. A guide might walk toward you. An animal may sit beside you. Or you might just feel a presence.
When something or someone arrives, ask some questions:
“Are you here to support me?”
“What name or symbol can I use for you?”
“What can you help me with?”
“What guidance do you have for me today?”
Afterward, write down what you remember. Even if it feels like imagination, record it. Over time, patterns will appear.
The more you return to this sacred meeting place, the stronger your connection becomes.
Don't get stuck on a name
Many people want to know their spirit guides’ names, which makes sense because it seems more personal to us.
You can ask for a name in meditation, through journaling, with oracle cards, or before sleep. Sometimes a name comes through clearly. Trust it without judgement.
Spirit guide names can be symbolic too. I have spiritual guidance that comes to me through an infinity sign.
So if you don't get a name but see a symbol instead you may want to just label it yourself.
A relationship with your guides is built through trust, rather than labels.
Learn how your guidance speaks
Your guides may not communicate the way you expect. Some people hear guidance internally, almost like a thought with a different tone. Some see images. Some feel sensations in the body. Some just know things without knowing how they know.
For example, I sometimes receive guidance through words that pop into my head that I wouldn't use myself and that I have to look up the definition when I hear it out of context. When I understand the meaning of the word it’s always the answer to my question.
You can make your connection stronger by noting what you receive in a journal. I have one labeled "signs" that I keep in my car. This helps me keep track of the symbolic guidance that shows up throughout my day.
Build the relationship through consistency
If you want a real relationship with your spirit guides, treat it like one.
You can say good morning to your guides. You can ask for support through a difficult situation. You can invite protection before traveling. You can recognize them when you notice a sign. You can sit with them once a week in your sacred meeting place.
Gratitude strengthens the connection too. So when you notice things make sure to thank your guides so you continue receiving messages. I also like to thank my guides before something happens, like, "Thank you for the miracles entering my life today".
You can tell your guides when you feel confused. You can ask them to communicate more clearly. You can say, “I need signs I can understand.” You can also set boundaries, like, “Please only come through when I'm ready to receive the message".
Spiritual connection should help you feel more present in your life.

Trust your experience without giving away your authority
While intuitives, mediums, teachers, and intuitives can be helpful and can validate your experiences or introduce you to traditions, names, or practices that open new doors, no one should become the final authority on your spirit team.
If someone tells you a guide’s name and it doesn't feel right, you are allowed to question it.
Your connection belongs to you.
